CALLING ALL GEOLOGISTS
From fourth-grade teacher Ms. Gray: We are going to start our Science unit on Earth Science and I was wondering if there are any parents with geology experience who would not mind volunteering 30 minutes in the afternoon to come speak with my class about their expertise. The students love to meet actual scientists and it helps them make connections. If you can help or know of someone who can, please contact me at cgray1@austinisd.org
GREEN UPDATES
Brentwood, Bryker Woods, and Gullett elementary schools are hosting a clothing swap on Feb. 22 from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. at Bryker Woods Elementary, in the style of the Swap-o-Rama Rama at Maker Faire. What makes it different than an ordinary swap is that right THERE at the swap, clothing can be altered to fit, changed into something completely different, and/or embellished with silk screen, buttons, pockets, zippers, etc. This is one more way to RE-USE and demonstrate to our kids that not everything has to come from a store when you have a community willing to barter and share.
As you clean out your closets this winter, please consider saving your gently-used clothing for the Swap-o-Rama Rama! In addition, we are looking for adults who are crafty and like working with kids to come up with some creative notions and who know how to manifest those notions with a sewing machine. Seamstresses would need to bring their own machines. If you are interested or available to volunteer for part or all of the afternoon, or know others who might, please contact Amy Cox at amyo69@hotmail.com. We are also working with the crafty folks of Greater Austin Garbage Art to organize the event, so we hope to have plenty of volunteers. Thanks so much!
During the Fall semester, we collected and recycled the following amounts of materials:
1,800 corks
1,000 energy bar wrappers
4 large garbage bags of cans
4 large garbage bags of plastic bottles
19 cell phones
130 pounds of batteries
30 pounds of printer cartridges
5 crocs!
Thank you to all those who brought their recycling to our school! We will continue to accept these items for recycling in our white bins across from the main office. Please note that we are no longer accepting plastic grocery bags, but you can still purchase PTA reusable bags at the PTA meetings!
VOLUNTEER IN THE NEW YEAR
The PTA is looking for a membership volunteer! We’ll have a quick and easy membership drive soon, and the membership volunteer would work with the treasurer, help send invitations to join and then get the cards to the new members. The job would take about two weeks. If you are interested in helping with this, please email Lisa Roe at lwroe@grandecom.net.
FIT FOR 2009
Want to get in better shape? You can join some Brentwood teachers in a Kinetic Fit Camp that meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The class will meet in the gymnasium. For more information, email sarahstewarttraining@msn.com or call Sarah at 797-1933. You may also visit her web site at www.sarahstewarttraining.com. Cost is $12 per class, but might be lowered if enough people sign up.
Have a great week!
